I just read Michael Pollan’s (who I love) book In Defense of Food. I know I have read some of his other books/follow him on Twitter/read his articles regularly. I know his whole belief schema. So the book wasn’t anything new or surprising… but it was still great and highly recommended!
The main takeaways are:
1. The expected: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”
2. But also the larger and more profound for me: Everything is interconnected… When you eat something, even a plant, you want to consider the soil it was grown in, the pesticides used, the amount of sunlight it got, the nutrition and flavor implications, how far this particular orange/apple/bunch of grapes traveled, etc. Too often I focus simply on healthfulness and cost, and as I don’t have enough money to always buy from farmer’s markets/organic, etc. I would like to consider it more. It’s about where that cow was raised, what it ate, how it was killed, and how high quality of a life it led. I know this sounds silly, but it’s true. You are what you eat. It’s about quality over quantity. It’s hard to go from point a to point b with this theory though… How am I actually going to practice this in my own life? I guess I am going to try to buy more high quality things, maybe buy less of them and savor them more, and eat more mindfully. Think about where each thing I ate came from, and if I want that energy to enter my body. I guess I could go on forever… but really, just read this book.
If I had one complaint… I almost felt like he could have gone more in depth/gone on longer! The end kind of took me as surprise… I was like “That’s it?!”
